Building Optimists - 2006/7 project
As the old Optimist sailing dinghies were showing their age after years of hard service at the Savusavu Junior Sailing Club, it was obvious to all that it was time to replace them. The club was fortunate to receive Optimist plans and six new rigs from IODA International (read more here) free of charge - thank you IODA! – as long as the club supplied the hulls. The kids of the Savusavu Junior Sailing Club were keen to get involved, and during school holidays we all got busy. Here's what it looked like:

1 Freewind Sailing Savusavu    2 Sailing Savusavu Bay of Islands
First, we lofted the boat plans on the plywood. Then cut the pieces ever so carefully.
3 Sailing Freewind Bay of Islands   4 Sailing Savusavu Freewind
There were plenty of hands to hold everything together for gluing and putting the screws in place.
5 Sailing Bay of Islands Freewind   6 Savusavu Junior Sailing Club
Making sure she’s good and strong…        … and won’t spring any leaks.
7 Savusavu Junior Sailing Club   8 Sailing Bay of Islands, Freewind
She’s really looking like  a boat now!            We want a nice, smooth hull.
9 Sailing Savusavu Freewind   10 Bay of Islands Sailing Freewind
Almost ready for painting.                                 Nice paint job, girls!
11 Sailing Fiji Savusavu   12 Bay of Islands Sailing Freewind
Proud sailors on launching day –                       Racing toward the finish line.
